Lock Haven University has seen its own outbreak in the area of creative poetry.

About five years ago, English professor Dr. Laurie Cannady founded Lyrically Speaking, the poetry club gives students the ability to unveil their creative works to other Lock Haven University students and faculty. The group was established for any university student who wants to express themselves in a creative and original way.

The group currently has eighteen members who share and critique each other’s work at their weekly meetings. At every meeting, the club will present a new writing challenge to improve their skills and writer’s block. For example, members had to “start with a cliché phrase and use it, write around it,” said Dereck Rodriguez, an LHU freshman majoring in English.

Lyrically Speaking travels and performs their creative works in front of audiences. The club has participated in multiple poetry slams and has been known to travel as far as NYC.

If anyone is interested in joining Lyrically Speaking, meetings are Thurs. from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Lower PUB, Meeting Room 1. The group is enthusiastic about new members and encourages anyone to stop in and check them out.
