The Lock Haven University men’s cross country team took third, overall, as they hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at West Branch Cross Country course.
In pursuit of their first team title since 2009, on Saturday, head coach Aaron Russell had high, but realistic, expectations going into the race as they faced a strong group of teams, includ- ing top seed Edinboro. From the beginning of the race, Bald Eagle sophomore, Alex Monroe (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), set the tone as he battled back and forth with Edinboro’s Scott Anderson along the 8 km course. In the final stretch Monroe was able to pull away to win the individual title with a time of 24.31.5, lead- ing the team to third overall behind winner, Edinboro.
In only his second race of the season, Coach Aaron Russell was excited about Monroe’s win and the fact that his team kept the race competitive the entire way. “The PSAC is one of the strongest conferences in the country, and I’m glad that we were able to come out in third.” Monroe was satisfied with his performance but believes that it’s just beginning, as he has high aspirations going towards the Atlantic Regionals and Nationals. “Now that my legs are starting to come back after not rac- ing for the last several weeks I would like to get a regional title, go to nationals, and get All-American.”
The Bald Eagles had other top finishers, including senior, Tim Getz (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter- Strasburg), who took eighth with a time of 25.07.2. Senior Josh Gainer (State College, Pa./Akron Univ.), also had a strong race fin- ishing 14th overall with a time of 25:24.3.
Lock Haven will host the LHU River Run on Saturday, October 29.
