Men’s Cross Country
Lock Haven Men’s Cross Country team boasted four All-Academic athletes in 2011. Vince Fadale, Josh Gainer, Mike Garaway, and Tim Getz were the four honorees. The cross-country team also garnered the P.S.A.C. athlete of the year for cross-country with Sophomore Alex Monroe. The team was very successful in 2011 as they were nationally ranked for the majority of the year, placed 2nd at the LHU Invite, 2nd at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, and finished 16th at Nationals in Spokane, Washington.
Finishing their season on a high note, the Women’s Field Hockey team won their last three games of the year to finish the season at 10-10. Those three wins included a 3-2 win at St. Louis, a 2-1 OT win against St. Joseph’s, and a 2-1 win against Temple at Charlotte Field to close out the season. Leslie Ahern had 12 goals and 12 assists and Kristi Shepps had 13 goals and 7 assists to help lead the Haven offensively.
Women’s Soccer team ended the season 6-9-3, but completed their season on a high note, finishing 4-3-1 in their last eight games. The highlight of their season came when they defeated nationally ranked Kutztown 1-0 on a pouring down night in frigid Hubert Jack Stadium. The team’s offensive attack was led by Freshman Jamie Hunter (4 goals, 1 assist), Sophomore Madison Taylor (3 goals, 3 assists), Freshman Natalie Issett (3 goals), Senior Bree Orth (2 goals, 2 assists), and Senior Carly D’Orsaneo (2 goals, 1 assist).
The agony of another winless season took place in 2011 for Lock Haven football under Coach Allen’s first season as head football coach. The Haven came their closest to getting that elusive win in their home opener in a 21-20 loss to Millersville in front of a packed crowd. The rest of the Haven’s defeats were on the lopsided end of things. The Bald Eagles averaged 10.4 points per game while giving up 43.7 points per game. The Bald Eagles will look to improve on these numbers and improve their record next year in Coach Allen’s second season as head coach.
Women’s Cross Country
The Lock Haven Women’s Cross Country team had three recipients earning All-Academic status in 2011 in the form of Lindsey Lambert, Katie Sick, and Courtney Whitmayer. They represented their school well in winning the LHU Invite, placing 2nd at the Atlantic Regional Tournament, and 20th at Nationals in Spokane, Washington.
Another successful season under their belt, the Women’s Volleyball team finished 21-10. They were 8-1 in the Thomas Fieldhouse and 7-1 away from home. They started out their P.S.A.C. Tournament with a win over Shippensburg, three sets to none, and then they beat Clarion three sets to two in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Haven came up short in the Finals losing to California, three sets to one. At the Atlantic Regional tournament, Lock Haven again beat Clarion three sets to two, but then had their season ended with a second round loss to Wheeling Jesuit, three sets to none.
Making a trip back to the P.S.A.C. playoffs for the first time since 2007 the Men’s Soccor Team earned a share of the regular season title. However, they were upset in the semi-finals by Bloomsburg going out in the cruelest of ways, losing 7-6 in penalty kicks after tying 1-1 in regulation. The Bald Eagles finished their season with an 11-7-1 record and ended the regular season with key wins over Millersville (2-0) and Slippery Rock (3-1). Greg Shertzer earned All-American honors and Martin Pletz and Kevin Wolfe garnered All Region honors for the Haven.
