Downes dominates in overtime thriller: Lady Eagles struggle to gain momentum heading into the playoffs

Nakira Downes scored in the second half to take her team to overtime.

The Lock Haven University field hockey team scored two goals in the second half to force overtime, but the Lady Eagles fell to host Temple, 4-3 in overtime on Sunday in Atlantic 10 action.

Temple (10-6, 3-0 A-10) led 3-1 at halftime, but Lock Haven (10-6, 1-2 A-10) got second half goals from Nakira Downes (Bridgetown, Barbados/The Combermere School) and Stephanie Ebersole (Elizabethtown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) to force overtime.

Temple scored its third goal of the match in the 26th minute as the Owls jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead.

Lock Haven didn’t fold and Taylor Kennedy (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township) put The Haven on the board in the 33rd minute.

Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Downes scored in the 41st minute and less than four minutes later, Ebersole knotted the match at 3-3.

Just 1:39 into overtime, Amber Youtz scored her second goal of the match to give Temple the win.

Elaina White (Etters, Pa./Red Land) made 11 saves in for Lock Haven.

Lock Haven is back in action on Friday, October 19 at 3 p.m. when the Lady Eagles host A-10 newcomer Virginia Commonwealth.
