The Lock Haven University baseball team (1-4) split a doubleheader on day one on the road with Shepherd University (3-9) and then dropped the final game of a three-game weekend series losing 9-4.
The Bald Eagles fell in game one, 21-4, but bounced back to take game two 3-1.
LHU scored four runs off of six hits in the game one loss.
Leading the way at the plate was Tyler Yesensky (Endwell, N.Y./Old Dominion), who went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Yesensky drove in Lock Haven’s first run of the game in the second inning when he smacked a solo homerun to right field. It was his first homerun as a Bald Eagle.
Yesensky was at it again when he drove in his second RBI of the game in third inning off of a double to right field.
LHU sent five different pitchers to the mound in the game and the Rams benefitted from an 11-run fifth inning.
Lock Haven picked up its first win of the season with the 3-1 win in game two.
Freshman Parker Watson (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) got the start on the mound for LHU and had a sensational outing as he picked up his first career win.
Watson threw all seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and fanned four Rams.
Leading the way at the plate was senior Jay Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) who was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Austin Botts went 1-for-3 with a double in the game.
Day two, LHU got off to quick start and scored three runs in the top of the first inning, starting with back-to-back singles from Hartman and Ryan Henritzy (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North).
Scott Zuback (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) came up next and smoked a double to left-centerfield to give LHU a 1-0 advantage.
After a sacrifice fly by Yesensky and a walk, Anthony Kyne (Newtown Square, Pa./Penn State Brandywine) singled up the middle to score Zuback and cap off the three-run LHU first.
The Bald Eagles tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, when Josh Jones (Neelyton, Pa./Southern-Huntingdon) hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Kyne to give LHU a 4-0 advantage.
The Shepherd pitching staff came around however, and LHU was only able to muster two more hits after the fourth inning.
After scoring one in the bottom of the fourth, the Rams added three runs to tie the game in the fifth and scored two more in the sixth to take the lead.
Shepherd plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull ahead 9-4.
Four of Shepherd’s final five runs were unearned.
Joe Nestor (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) got the start on the mound for LHU. Nestor allowed four runs and struck out four Rams in 4.2 innings of work.
Alec Jacob (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) and Garrett Shnyder (Montgomery, Pa./Montgomery) combined to throw the final 3.1 innings in relief.
Jacob struck out one hitter in 1.1 innings of work and Shnyder fanned one Ram in the last two innings.
The Bald Eagles return to action Saturday (March 16) when LHU travels to Florida for its annual spring break trip. LHU is scheduled to play six games over the break and kicks off the trip with a doubleheader on Saturday against Ashland University.
