During my recent trip to New York City, I was reminded of all the amazing musicals I have seen on Broadway. There is something about musicals that seem to capture the raw energy of life and kick us in the heart with it. I thought I would share with you my favorite musicals that really kicked me in the heart.

5. Mamma Mia!

If you saw the movie, you need to see the show, it’s even better. This musical is about Sophie, who wants her father to be at her wedding, but she doesn’t know who he is. So she invites three of her mother’s old boyfriends–one of which could be her dad. Hilarity ensues.

4. Lion King

I feel like I don’t need to explain this one, but just in case, this Disney musical is about a lion named Simba who is to become king, but his evil uncle kills his father (seriously go see the movie). The musical is indescribably good. The puppetry and effects are just magnificent.

3. Memphis

This is the story of a white radio deejay in 1950s Memphis who falls in love with black singer. You need to see this! The music and dancing is amazing and the story really drags you in with humor, drama and sincerity. It won four Tony Awards.

2. Phantom of the Opera

This is about a mysterious masked genius who becomes obsessed with the beautiful opera singer Christine Daaé at the Paris Opera House in 1881. The special effects are so cool with flames and things falling. This musical has murder and romance and has been on Broadway for over 25 years, so you know it’s good.

1. Wicked

Why is the Wicked Witch of the West wicked? This musical answers that question. This is the captivating story of green-skinned Elphaba and her unlikely friend Glinda as they face rivalry, love and a corrupt government. The music is inspiring and just pure beauty. This musical is hilarious and very emotional.
