The University Players will be performing “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” in Sloan Auditorium on April 10-12 and 17- 19 at 7:30 p.m. as play 1well as a matinee at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 12. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and high school students, and free for LHU students with ID.

The play is set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where Vanya and his stepsister Sonia are trapped at home while their sister Masha is gallivanting around the world. While Vanya and Sonia reflect on lost chances, they get a surprising visit from Masha and her boyfriend Spike.

This comedic play, written by Christohper Durang, is winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. Durang describes the play as taking “Chekhovian characters and themes and [putting] them in a blender.”

“I think Durang, the playwright, is a really amazing writer, and he just makes working on any show that I ever directed with him as a playwright just a lot of fun” said the director Sally Story, Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing for the Visual and Performing Arts Department at LHU.

“She kinda lets you do your own thing,” said junior Abdullah Ivey, a theater major, about Story’s directing style. “She wants you to develop your own character . . . she’s really good at that.”

The play stars Lisa Conners as Sonia, Stuart Harsch as Vanya, Abdullah Ivey as Spike, Brooke Reese as Masha, Alyssa Shilk as Nina, and Taylor Thompson as Cassandra. The cast of six students have been working hard together.

“I’ve had so much fun” said Junior Brooke Reese a musical theater major. “I’ve been in one other production here, and this is a smaller cast and it’s more close knit. We really get to work with each other; we give each other really good criticisms.”

Be aware this production is for mature audiences. You can reserve tickets by contacting the Box Office at 570-484-3983.
