The new Marvel movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has stormed the box office this weekend. The movie features the return of the superhero Captain America aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) now working alongside the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) for the organization S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Steve struggles to find his place in this new modern world while facing a new enemy, the infamous Winter Soldier, who he must fight with the help of his new friend Sam Wilson aka the Falcon (Anthony Mackie). This truly has to be one of the most intense and action packed Marvel movies yet. There were so many intense and spectacularly choreographed fight scenes that you could hardly catch your breath (not to mention explosions).

The plot immediately grabbed you and took you for a wild ride of mystery, betrayal and a whole lot of crazy. Marvel easily handled multiple complex characters without watering them down to basic support beams for Captain America’s struggles, especially Black Widow, Falcon and Nick Fury. Not only did we get an amazing glimpse into the life of Nick Fury, but also a good hard look at the moral complexity of character and how he feels about S.H.I.E.L.D. We got a similar exploration of Natasha (Black Widow) and her reasoning and moral code, as well as plenty of Black Widow kicking butt.

Johansson and Evans characters played off each other fantastically like a pair of synchronized swimmers. Their playful banter alleviated the intensity of the movie while fleshing and developing the characters. Their relationship was truly fascinating. Of course I have to mention the amazing performance of Anthony Mackie. His portrayal of Sam Wilson was amazing and I truly hope to see more of the Falcon in future Marvel films. Not only did he create a well-rounded and complex character, but also brought up the complexities of war and loss.

This is truly the movie of the month, and though we are going into the hectic, stressful time of the semester I really encourage everyone to take a break and go see this action packed movie (especially if you’re a fan of the TV show “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” because it really affects it). Trust me you won’t regret it!
