The Lock Haven GSA was invited to a poetry reading on Wednesday April 16 at Bloomsburg university.

The poetry was being read by acclaimed slam poet Andrea Gibson. Gibson is an award winning poet whose poetry focuses on the fight against patriarchy and preaches against the prejudices of the LGBTQ community.

Gibson read poetry from her many published collections, including ‘Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns’ and ‘Yellow Bird.’ Gibson also read some poems with her childhood best friend Katie Wirsing. The two women used their poems to speak eloquently and effectively about rape culture.

The crowd was highly receptive to Gibson’s revolutionary poetry. Many people, throughout her performance stood up and cheered at the ideology she was spitting.

Sara Cecchini, a sophomore majoring in social work stated, “it was an amazing performance and I’m so happy I went. It’s so great having such a strong role model representing the LGBTQ community.”

Andrea Gibson is currently touring the US promoting her poetry. Her next performance is on Tuesday at Mansfield university.
