With Halloween right around the corner, one of the best things to do is to rent a bunch of gothic movies because really, how many of us college kids go trick-or-treating anymore. When I think gothic, I think of Tim Burton.

Burton is a creative genius who has made a number of memorable films. His films are some of the most hauntingly beautiful films out there and almost every single one is worth watching. In the spirit of Halloween, here is a list of some of his best movies.

5. Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride is an interesting tale about a shy, young groom who practices his wedding vows unknowingly in front of a deceased young woman. Thinking they are now married, she rises from her grave.

Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter give a beautiful musical performance in this feature. This is a  film perfect to set off the mood for Halloween. It was shot with a method referred to as stop-motion photography, a method utilized in 1993 with the release of Nightmare Before Christmas.

4. Batman (1989)

One of the first darker spins following one of the most loved caped-crusaders. It was the predecessor of the dark twist Christopher Nolan applied to the recent Dark Knight trilogy. While at times the movie can be noted as a little goofy, it is no doubt one of the most interesting tellings of the Batman story.

3. Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is the story of a couple of recently deceased ghosts contacting the services of a bio-exorcist so they can remove the new, overbearing owners of their house.

Beetlejuice is one of those films that will make your sides split from so much laughter.  There is no doubt in my mind that Burton captured Beetlejuice’s character perfectly, his insanity and high-intensity personality is one not many people could have recreated. Being Burton’s second film, it is one that showcased how successful the rest of Burton’s career would be.

2. Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands tells the story of a gentle young man, born with scissors for hands, who falls in love with a beautiful adolescent girl and in turn learns what love is. This film is no doubt one of Burton’s most successful films ever. It is a film with a lead character that many people easily fell in love with.

1. Nightmare Before Christmas

This film is perfect for Halloween and Christmas. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, who discovers a portal to Christmastown. Fascinated by Christmas, Jack decides to try and let the people of Halloweentown celebrate it with him, even though he doesn’t fully understand it.

This film is perfect, right down to the score by Danny Elfman. This film is a heartwarming one that has a plot and characters that just capture an audience. Famous tunes such as “This Is Halloween” are very memorable and stick with viewers for awhile after viewing it. It is definitely one of Burton’s best films and it is perfect for a Tim Burton Halloween marathon.
