Alpha Sigma Tau Sponsors Local Food Drive

ast-300x171LOCK HAVEN, Pa- Lock Haven University’s Alpha Sigma Tau chapter will be sponsoring a “Healthy Kids Food Drive” on Saturday April 9th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau will be organizing bags of food to give to students at local elementary schools who rely heavily on food programs provided by their schools. Local schools have set up this “weekend food program” for children living in lower-income households who do not always have a substantial amount of food to eat.

When asked why the sorority was organizing the food drive, Jessie Biltz, a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, said “LHU’s Alpha Sigma Tau will be celebrating our 95th anniversary as a chapter the same weekend as the food drive. We believe in contributing to the progress of mankind, and the food drive is a fantastic way to give back to everything this community has given us.”

Over 5,700 children in Central Pennsylvania rely on schools for their meals. When school is not open, like on holidays or weekends, many children go hungry. By organizing this food drive and delivering the bags of food to schools, the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau are hoping to help provide nourishment to children in need. Nationwide, more than 21 million children eat free or reduced-price lunches. Of these millions of children, many are living in poverty and not properly fed at home, according to the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service. This statistic shows that hunger and malnourishment is not just a problem for children in our community, but a problem for youth across America.

When children do not even know where their next meal is coming from, simple things like completing a homework assignment or becoming involved in a sport become much more difficult. When children do not receive proper nutrition, their achievements and behavior as students are greatly affected. Children who live in poverty are more likely to be tardy or act out during class. Therefore, providing children with food means so much more than just giving them a meal; they are also receiving peace of mind.

You do not have to be a sister of Alpha Sigma Tau to participate in the food drive on April 9th. Donations of non-perishable food items would be greatly appreciated. These items include cans of meat and soups, breakfast items such as granola bars or boxes of cereal, packaged noodles, canned vegetables and fruits, juice boxes, and snack-sized bags of pretzels, chips and cookies. Collection boxes for the food drive have been set out in each residence hall on campus. Every item of food is appreciated, so if you have any ramen noodles or Spaghetti-o’s to spare, please donate. Together we can take the small steps in order to wipe out childhood hunger completely.
