The Lock Haven University football team (0-3) suffered a tough loss at the hands of Slippery Rock University (3-0) last Saturday (Sep. 17) at Hubert Jack Stadium with a final score of 59-23. Slippery Rock was ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division II poll.
Lock Haven had a rough time running the ball as the Slippery Rock defense only gave up four rushing yards. Slippery Rock also had twice as many offensive yards with 648 and Lock Haven recorded 312 yards.
The scoring started with Cornelius Raye catching a 43-yard catch from quarterback Don King III just two minutes into the game. Shamar Greene cashed in with a rushing touchdown six minutes later and Jake Chapla nailed a 44-yard field goal to make the score 17-0 after the first quarter.
After 12 scoreless minutes in the second quarter, Greene earned his second rushing touchdown of the game followed by a 6-yard pass from King to Drew Scales in the end zone to make the score 31-0 at halftime.
With the score well out of reach heading into the third quarter, Lock Haven wanted to make sure they did not get shutout at home for the first time since Oct. 17, 2009 when the Bald Eagles lost to Indiana University (PA) 45-0.
Slippery Rock continued their dominance with Raye’s second touchdown reception from King and a 1-yard rushing touchdown from Isiah Neely to make the score 45-0 after three quarters.
Lock Haven finally got on the board 36 seconds into the fourth quarter with a 30-yard field goal from Freshman Ethan Harro. Slippery Rock responded quickly with a rushing touchdown from Dontez Rash.
Lock Haven redshirt-senior quarterback Caleb Walton scored the first touchdown for LHU with a 1-yard run to make the score 52-10. Less than a minute later, redshirt-senior Shawn Seif ran five yards into the end zone to make the score 52-17. After another rushing touchdown from Slippery Rock’s Neely, Lock Haven capped off the scoring with a 4-yard pass to Kashim Buey from Cameron Tobias to make the final score 59-23 in favor of Slippery Rock. It was Buey’s first touchdown of his college career.
On the defensive side, Freshman Destyn Woody led LHU with 14 tackles. Defensive back Isaiah Flamer finished the game with 12 tackles of his own and a pass breakup.
Seif also leads the PSAC with an average of 183.3 receiving yards through three games after catching 11 passes and receiving over 100 yards in all three games. Walton threw for 268 yards last Saturday.
