Has Yeezy jumped over Jumpman?

In February, we saw Adidas release two colorways of Mr. West’s signature shoe line. His Yeezy Boost 350 V2 is the latest and greatest model of the Yeezy line. Adidas dropped the “Black/Red” colorway on February 11 with a normal release of 40,000 units and price of $220. They are currently reselling on FlightClub (one of the leading resell shoe websites) for anywhere from $800 to $900 depending on which size you’d like.

The second Yeezy release of the month was a much more limited drop still at $220 a pair, the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Zebra.’This was a highly anticipated release for Adidas. The ‘Zebra’ colorway has attracted a lot of attention from resale sites and shoe collectors. On FlightClub they are listed for $2,250 to $2,500. That is the highest resale price for a Yeezy shoe since the year one yeezy Boost 350 “Turtle Dove” colorway launched, which was also a limited drop.

Jordan Brand in the month of February also had multiple big releases slated. Jordan is a much wider shoe brand and releases a vast amount of shoes compared to the Adidas Yeezy line.

Jordan Brand had three pretty hyped up releases for the month of February. The first drop came on the fourth of February, The Air Jordan 4 Retro “Royalty” sold for 190 dollars. They are currently only reselling on FlightClub for 250 bucks.

The second release of the month were possibly the most hyped Jordan shoe of the year so far. Jordan announced it was releasing the Air Jordan 5 Retro Premium “Take Flight” on February 11. The sneaker is military-inspired featuring a premium leather upper with a metallic gold vachetta tan leather tongue, with a tonal midsole, and an icy outsole. The shoes sold for a whopping $400 a pair, while now reselling on FlightClub from $550-$600.

On February 18 Air Jordan dropped the Air Jordan 12 Retro OVO “Black” an inspiration from the rapper Drake. This collaboration was another signature shoe with Drake’s OVO imprint on it in celebration of the NBA all-star game. The shoe sold for $225 and is reselling currently from 700-900 dollars on FlightClub.

While Jordan is obviously the most polarizing shoe brand in the world, Adidas is making up ground in the shoe game. Adidas shoes have been gaining more hype each and every release, especially when Jordan and Nike aren’t coming up with any new great designs.

The Yeezy line is also helping Adidas draw a lot of attention, anything Kanye West does is blown up on social media. Every time one of his shoes drop they sell out within minutes, if not seconds. It is very hard to cop a pair of Yeezys.

Adidas has seen a large rise in sales in the past year. In 2016, sales were looking to grow by almost 15% where it was forecasted to only rise 10% this past year. Net profits are also on the rise for Adidas, by 15 to 18%.

With the numbers matching the people’s response and hype, has Adidas jumped over Jumpman? They haven’t yet in volume sales and may never jump them there. But what matters now-a-days is the public’s opinion, and of recent that ball is Adidas, and Yeezy’s court.
